What is OnlyFans?

OnlyFans is a British subscription platform where creators offer exclusive content to paying fans. It was founded in 2016 by Tim Stokely and is now owned by Fenix International. With more than 220 million registered users and 4 million active creators, it's one of the biggest fan platforms in the world.

What OnlyFans means is simple: fans pay a monthly amount to get access to their favorite creator's exclusive content. The creator decides what to publish and how much it costs. The platform is known for adult content, but it also allows fitness, cooking, music and other niches.

OnlyFans is completely legal in the Netherlands. The platform complies with European privacy law and processes payments through certified payment providers. You'll find more background on the platform in a Dutch context on our OnlyFans page.

How does OnlyFans work?

OnlyFans was founded in London in 2016 by Timothy Stokely and falls under Fenix International Ltd. The idea was simple: fans pay creators directly for exclusive content, with no advertisers in between. That model caught on especially with adult creators, who to this day generate the vast majority of revenue. In the 2024 financial year, fans spent 7.2 billion dollars there, of which the platform itself kept around 1.4 billion as revenue.

The company itself would rather be seen more broadly. Through the free streaming channel OFTV and sponsorship deals in the sports world, OnlyFans is clearly pushing toward fitness, music and entertainment, although that changes little about where the money comes from. Behind the scenes, 2026 was eventful: owner Leonid Radvinsky died in March at the age of 43, his widow Katie Chudnovsky took over control of Fenix, and in May the company sold a 16 percent stake to investor Architect Capital for 535 million dollars. Day-to-day management has been in the hands of CEO Keily Blair since 2023.

What sets OnlyFans apart from younger competitors: there's no discovery feed or algorithm that promotes creators. If you want to earn, you bring your own audience from Instagram, TikTok or X. That makes the platform strong for established names and tough for beginners. Read more about the opportunities and limitations in our overview of the best fan platform for creators in 2026.

OnlyFans runs on two income streams: subscriptions to creator profiles and one-off purchases such as pay-per-view content, tips and paid messages. Creators set their own prices, and fans decide profile by profile whether to join. To see how that model compares with its biggest challenger, read our comparison of Fansly and OnlyFans.

For creators

  • Sign up and verify: registering is free, but you can only sell after a KYC check with a valid ID and selfie. Approval usually takes one to three days.
  • Ways to earn: subscriptions from $4.99 to $49.99 a month, pay-per-view posts, tips, paid private messages and livestreams. A free profile with separate paid content works too.
  • Dashboard: statistics, mass messaging segmented by spending pattern, a content vault and scheduled posting. Professional tools, as long as you have fans to use them on.
  • Discoverability: there's no algorithm or discovery page promoting you. You build your reach entirely yourself through social media, and if you start from zero, you stay at zero without outside traffic. Want to get going fast as a new creator anyway? Check out our guide to becoming a creator and earning money from content.

For fans

  • Free account: creating an account costs nothing; you only pay when you take a subscription or make a one-off purchase.
  • Search: there's no discovery feed, so you have to know a creator from social media or a review site before you can find them.
  • Payment: credit card only (Visa, Mastercard or Maestro), always in dollars. iDEAL and PayPal aren't available; you'll find the alternatives in our explainer on paying on OnlyFans without a credit card. The charge also shows up as OnlyFans on your bank statement, so don't count on discretion.
  • No app: because of Apple and Google policy there is no official app. The mobile website works well as a substitute.
  • Cancelling: turn off auto-renewal on the creator's profile; you keep access until the end of the paid period.

OnlyFans costs: what do you pay as a fan or creator?

An account is free for both fans and creators. Fans pay per subscription or one-off purchase, and creators give the platform a fixed percentage of their revenue.

Cost itemAmount
Create accountFree (fan and creator)
Subscription for fans$4.99 to $49.99 per month, set per creator
Pay-per-view, tips and messagesVariable, set per creator
Platform commission20% of revenue
Creator keeps80% of revenue
Referral program5% of the revenue of referred creators, for 12 months

The 20 percent commission is in line with the market and equal to what Fansly charges. Do keep an eye on the exchange rate: everything on OnlyFans is in dollars, so your actual costs and earnings in euros fluctuate along with it. You can read how the platform's rates compare with the rest of the market in our overview of commissions and costs per platform.

OnlyFans and iDEAL: why it doesn't work and what you can do

One of the questions Dutch fans ask most: does iDEAL work on OnlyFans? The short answer is no. The platform only accepts credit cards (Visa, Mastercard or Maestro) and has no plans to add iDEAL or other local payment methods. That's a deliberate choice by the British company, which focuses on an international audience.

What can you do if you don't have a credit card? The most common fixes are a prepaid Visa card (sold at supermarkets like Albert Heijn or online via Revolut or Wise), or a digital account with a credit card feature. Some Dutch banks now also offer a virtual Mastercard. You'll find more details on all the options in our guide to paying on OnlyFans without a credit card.

Looking for a platform that does support iDEAL? Then Friends2Follow (F2F) is the strongest alternative for the Dutch market. It was founded in the Netherlands, supports iDEAL and falls under Dutch law. Read our platform comparison for the full overview.

Safety and payouts

OnlyFans runs a strict KYC process: creators submit a valid ID and a selfie before they can sell anything, and fans also have to prove their age when they sign up. It isn't flawless, though: in March 2025 the company was fined over a million pounds by the UK regulator Ofcom for providing incorrect information about its age checks. For privacy, creators can use geoblocking to shut out entire countries, the Netherlands for example, so people they know don't stumble on their profile. Where the platform isn't available at all is covered in our overview of countries where OnlyFans is banned.

After a transaction, earnings sit in a pending balance for about 7 days (for some countries and new accounts it can be up to 21 days), and after that you can withdraw from $20, manually or automatically every week or month. Payouts go by bank transfer or e-wallet and take one to five working days. PayPal isn't supported. OnlyFans doesn't withhold tax, but as a platform it does fall under the European reporting obligation, which means your revenue ends up with the Dutch tax office. Read what that means in our explainer on DAC7 in the Netherlands.

How much does an OnlyFans subscription cost?

It depends on the creator. Creators set their own price, anywhere from $4.99 to $49.99 a month. Free profiles exist too, but those earn through separate pay-per-view content and tips. You always pay in dollars, so keep exchange rate swings in mind.

What commission does OnlyFans charge?

How quickly does OnlyFans pay out?

Earnings sit in a pending balance for about 7 days, and after that you can withdraw them from $20, manually or automatically every week or month. A bank transfer or e-wallet payout then takes one to five working days. For some countries and new accounts, a longer pending period of up to 21 days applies.

Who is behind OnlyFans?

OnlyFans is owned by Fenix International Ltd of London and was founded in 2016 by Timothy Stokely. Majority shareholder Leonid Radvinsky died in March 2026, after which his widow Katie Chudnovsky took over control and investor Architect Capital bought a 16 percent stake. Is OnlyFans safe to use?

For fans, OnlyFans is generally safe: credit card payments are well protected and the platform runs age checks. Creators go through a mandatory KYC procedure with an identity document. One thing to watch: in 2025 the platform was fined by the British regulator Ofcom for shortcomings in its age verification of fans. With geoblocking, creators can hide their profile from specific countries.

What are good alternatives to OnlyFans?

Fanvue offers AI tools and also takes a 20% commission. Read our comparison of the best platform for creators for the full picture.
